How to make a professional marketing video with Canva (step by step)

Now that you know some of the great ways to use videos for marketing, it's time to learn how to make one. Canva is a great option for creating professional marketing videos. With Canva, you can create videos with captions, overlays and graphics. Plus, their pro plan offers an easy-to-use video editor tool. It's great for loads of graphic design projects, we wrote about how to create professional product images with Canva in this article.

Here's how to make a professional marketing video:

First, I want to show you this example again. It's an advert for a fictional clothing brand, that I put together in under 30 minutes, to show you how easy it is.

Looks great right? It was very easy to do, can you believe I created this in less than 30 minutes! This video would be great to use for adverts, as a banner on a site's homepage or on social media.

To get started, you're going to need to sign up to Canva. You can do this by going to Canva and creating an account. Once you've done that, you will be able to start using the Canva video editor tool.

Sign in to your Canva account and head straight to the 'Create A Design' button in the top right corner. If you don't see the option to create a video, type it into the search bar and select the video option.

Add the video that you would like to edit. You can upload your own video to work on, but, if you don't have your own video, you can take a look through the Canva video library and find something that's perfect for your brand.

If you want to use more than one video and add some nice transitions and cut away's you can do that too. I'm going to show you how to set up transitions in-between frames later on.

At the very beginning of the video, I want to have the main logo for the business, to make it instantly recognisable. At the end of the video, I want to have a call to action. Canva makes it very easy to add these elements into your video with their graphics and text tools.

Since this is an advert, I also want to make sure that there is some on-screen text that will be hard to miss and deliver the key message of the advert, which is why I add an overlaying text box.

If you have got one long video clip, how do you set up the text and graphics to appear for only certain parts of the video? Easy! You need to split the video into pages and add your graphic elements to the frames.

Here's how I did it:

Use the slider bar in the video editor tool to select the point where you want the Logo graphic to show. Right-click on the slider and choose 'Split Page'.

You can then click on the first page, that has been separated from the rest and add whatever graphics you want, they will only show for the duration of that page.

In this next video clip you can see that I have added the logo to the first page and when I click play it shows at the start and then disappears after the first page has finished playing.

When the logo disappears, I want my main sales message to show, so on the next page I add the graphic for the sale announcement.

I don't want the video to appear clunky, as if it's just jumping through different frames, so I add some animations to the graphic to make it appear on the page rising up from the bottom.

I'm happy with how it is looking so far, so I will just continue to create the page breaks throughout the video, wherever I want my graphics and animations to happen. After I finished adding my page breaks and graphics, I found some music in the Canva audio library and added it to my video.

In the end, my edited video is going to end up looking like this.

If you watch closely, you can see as the pages change in the bar at the bottom, the graphics on the video are also changing.

So, keep it simple!

Music can help set the tone and mood of your Canva video. Choose a song that fits the overall theme and feel of your video. The Canva audio library has a wide variety of songs to choose from, so you're sure to find the perfect one for your video.

3. Your video should be short and to the point.

No one wants to watch a long, drawn-out video. Keeping your marketing videos short and sweet, around 20 to 30 seconds is ideal. This way you'll keep your viewers engaged and they won't get bored halfway through and click away. If your video is an explainer video or a tutorial or something that requires it to be longer, that's fine, just make sure it's still interesting and engaging throughout the entire video.
